RAP & IBR Student Loan Payment Calculator (2026)
Estimate your monthly federal student loan payment under the Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP), available since July 1, 2026, and under Income-Based Repayment (IBR). Runs in your browser.
How RAP is calculated
RAP payments are a percentage of your total AGI, from 1% to 10%, divided by 12. Your payment is reduced by $50 a month for each dependent you claim, and it can't be less than $10 a month. If your AGI is $10,000 or less, the yearly base is $120.
| AGI | Base payment |
|---|---|
| Up to $10,000 | $120 a year |
| $10,001 – $20,000 | 1% of AGI |
| $20,001 – $30,000 | 2% |
| Each further $10,000 | +1 point |
| $90,001 – $100,000 | 9% |
| Over $100,000 | 10% |
On RAP, unpaid monthly interest is waived when you pay on time, and if your payment reduces principal by less than $50, the government adds up to $50 toward principal. Remaining balances are forgiven after 30 years of qualifying payments. RAP is open to most Direct Loans; loans made to parents (Parent PLUS) are not eligible, even if consolidated.
How IBR is calculated
IBR is 10% of discretionary income for new borrowers (first loan on or after July 1, 2014) or 15% for others, divided by 12, and never more than the 10-year Standard payment. Discretionary income is AGI minus 150% of the HHS poverty guideline for your family size. We use the 2026 guidelines ($15,960 for one person in the 48 states and DC, plus $5,680 per additional person; Alaska $19,950 plus $7,100). IBR is only open to loans disbursed before July 1, 2026. Hawaii uses different guidelines not built in here.

Married borrowers filing jointly use combined income and may get a reduction if a spouse also has loans; this estimator doesn't model that.
